Citation Builder
Fill the fields from the source record. Everything formats locally; nothing is sent anywhere.
Covers the common journal-article case. Books, chapters and websites need extra fields. Always check the result against your style guide before submitting.
What each style orders differently
APA puts the year right after the author and uses sentence case for the title. MLA puts the title in quotes and the container in italics. Chicago uses a note-and-bibliography pattern that differs again. The formatter keeps the field order explicit so you can see which piece each style moved.
Limits of a local formatter
It does not fetch metadata or validate a DOI. It also does not italicise, because plain-text references paste more reliably into documents. Apply italics in your word processor if your style requires them.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use it for a book?
Not reliably. Books need publisher, place and edition fields. Use a full citation manager for books and chapters.
Is the DOI link required in APA?
Current APA style gives a DOI when one exists, formatted as a URL. Remove the DOI field if the source has none and delete the trailing link.
Why are the author names not reformatted?
The formatter preserves what you enter. Entering the author in the order your style expects avoids silent mistakes from automatic name parsing.
